Oregon Pharmacy Technician Training

As a pharmacy technician you will perform a multi tasked and varied role in assisting a licensed pharmacist.  Become part of the 4,900  pharmacy techs actively working in Oregon by completing your education and training in less than a year!

There are several training programs for individuals interested in becoming pharmacy technicians in Oregon found in vocational, technical or community colleges:

  • Certificate programs (typically less than a year) or,
  • Diploma programs (typically one year) or
  • An associate degree program (typically two years long).

Upon completion of a pharmacy technician training program students are prepared for entry-level employment in retail and hospital pharmacies and pharmacies within medical and doctor's offices as well as registration with State Board of Pharmacy and ability to pass certification exams as a pharmacy technician.

If you are currently working or have children training can also be done online. During training students will learn how to take prescription orders, fill prescriptions and how to fully assist the lead pharmacist. In addition students will learn how to operate as a pharmacy technician in community pharmacies, hospitals, in-home health care setting.

Oregon Pharmacy Technician Certification Requirements

Certification is mandatory. The state of Oregon require pharmacy technicians to be certified through either PTCB (Pharmacy Technician Certification Board) or ICPT Institute for the Certification of Pharmacy Technicians). Students who complete a training program are well equipped to pass either of these national certifying exams. Look up pharmacy technician certification to see which is the better certification for you. There are 3,562 actively working CPhTs with PTCB residing in Oregon as of December 31, 2020.

Oregon Pharmacy Technician License Requirements

Registration/Licensure is required for pharmacy technicians to work in the state of Oregon. This is done with the Oregon State Board of Pharmacy.
